![]() Reflection of Fall Colors in Maramec Spring Fortunately for us, the site has been converted to an idyllic park for tourists, fishermen, hikers and picnickers. What remains is a mere remnant of a once-bustling industrial community. The spring predates man and was probably a very important site to Native Americans. ![]() The 5 th largest spring in Missouri is not just a beautiful sight in fact, the spring produced enough water flow to supply the iron furnace with all of the power for its production process. ![]() Maramec Spring itself is perhaps 500 yards from the furnace. Operated from 1827-1891, it produced pig iron for the Union Army during the Civil War. It is a remnant of the first commercially successful iron furnace west of the Mississippi. The Maramec Spring Iron Furnace is a towering structure that is evident upon entering the park. James, heading for Maramec Spring Park and the attractions located there. We entered Phelps County, driving west along MO-Highway 8 between Sullivan and St. I was joined on this trip by my long time friend and this blog’s editor, Jon G. My visit to Phelps county started late on the first day of a three-day, four county trip through central Missouri in mid November 2014.
